Artem Yevgenyevich Metlin was born on October 4, 1976. In 2001, he graduated from the Ivanovo State Agricultural Academy with specialization in Veterinary Medicine. In 1996, he started his working career as a laboratory researcher at the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Health. In 2005, he successfully defended the Candidate thesis “Molecular and biological properties of rabies virus field isolates and attenuated strains”.

In February 2006, Artem Ye. Metlin entered a PhD progamme at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Helsinki (Finland). In January 2008, he successfully defended the doctoral thesis “Genetic characteristics of field and attenuated rabies viruses and molecular epidemiology of rabies in Finland and Russia” and he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Veterinary Medicine.

During the career at the Institute, Dr. Metlin followed all stages of the professional development – from junior researcher and head of laboratory to the Deputy Director for Research and Development.

In 2013–2016, Artem Ye. Metlin worked as a senior researcher in the Virology Department at the Pasteur Institute in Cambodia being ECOMORE Project Manager.

In February 2019, Artyem Ye. Metlin defended the dissertation “Complex of Measures and Methods for Rabies Diagnosis and Control” for the degree of Doctor of Science (Veterinary Medicine).

From August 2019 to July 2020, he held a position of Deputy Director for Science at the FGBI “VGNKI” (Moscow).

From July 2020, Artem Ye. Metlin was the First Deputy Director and Interim Director of the FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” (FGBI “ARRIAH”) in Vladimir.

In September 2020, A. Ye. Metlin was appointed as Deputy Director for Research and Quality at the FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” (FGBI “ARRIAH”) (Vladimir).

The core research activities of Artem Ye. Metlin are focused on examination of the biological and antigenic properties of the rabies virus field isolates and vaccine strains as well as on rabies molecular epidemiology in the Russian Federation, development of up-to-date means and methods for rabies diagnosis, assessment of effectiveness of anti-rabies immunization of wild and domestic animal species.

Under Dr. Metlin’s leadership the system of interlaboratory comparisons for rabies diagnosis as well as the system of the disease epidemic monitoring were developed and introduced in the Russian Federation. International cooperation programs for rabies control and prevention were developed and implemented by the Russian Federation and a number of foreign countries (Finland, EU, Ethiopia). These activities resulted in rabies freedom maintenance in Finland and Republic of Karelia and in rabies eradication in the Kaliningrad Oblast. Complex of CIS joint activities for rabies prevention and control to be implemented until 2025 was developed and approved.

Artem Ye. Metlin is the author and co-author of over 60 research publications including monographs and two patents for inventions.
