Peer Review
The editorial staff of the journal "Veterinary Science Today" adhere to the COPE recommendations when working with manuscripts, reviewers and when organizing the review process.
- General information and type of review
All manuscripts submitted to the editorial staff of the journal "Veterinary Science Today" undergo mandatory double-blinded peer review. This means that neither the author nor the reviewer knows the names and affiliations of each other, and all correspondence is conducted through the e-mail address given in the electronic editorial office on the website of the journal "Veterinary Science Today". Each manuscript is sent to at least two reviewers. Review is carried out on a voluntary basis and free of charge.
The anonymity of the author limits the bias of the reviewer, for example, depending on the gender and age of the author, country of his/her origin, his/her academic status and socioeconomic background or history of previous publications.
Articles written by authoritative or well-known authors are considered based on their content, not the reputation of the authors.
An unbiased, independent, critical peer review is an important addition to the scientific process, it improves the quality and ensures the reliability of articles published in the journal "Veterinary Science Today".
All manuscripts submitted to the editorial staff of the journal are reviewed by at least two independent experts, members of the editorial board, and reviewers invited from Russia and other countries that are considered among leading experts in the field, work in research areas relevant to the topic of the manuscript, and have publications on the subject of the paper under review within the last 3 years. If the opinions of two reviewers differ significantly, a third expert reviewer is involved in examination process of the paper.
When choosing a reviewer, the editor-in-chief (or his/her deputy) are guided by the expertise of the reviewer and the absence of professional relationships between the author and the reviewer.
When submitting an article for reviewing, the author may indicate persons with whom there is or may be a conflict of interest caused by competition or cooperation. The editorial staff of the journal will take this information into account.
In their work, reviewers are guided by the principles formulated by the Committee on Publication Ethics, that served the basis for Publication Ethics section.
- Review period
The review process in the "Veterinary Science Today" journal takes on average from 1 to 3 months, but it can be extended at the request of the reviewer. This period includes the time for the initial review of the manuscript, the selection of reviewers, the time for preparing a review, the time for editing the article by the author, re-reviewing, and referring to additional experts.
- Review progress
The reviewer has an option to abnegate the assessment should any conflict of interests arise that may affect perception or interpretation of the manuscript.
Reviews should be kept in the journal's office for 5 years.
The editorial staff of the journal provides review copies to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation at the corresponding request.
All scientific articles submitted to the editorial staff of the journal are reviewed according to the approved procedure:
- Examination on formal grounds: the editorial staff of the journal determines the compliance of the article with the profile of the journal, the requirements for format and originality (the manuscripts are subject to mandatory checking using the Antiplagiat software) and sends it for consideration to the editor-in-chief (or his/her deputy), who determines the scientific value of the manuscript and assigns reviewers. If the check results reveal that the manuscript does not meet the editorial's requirements in terms of the format, borrowings and scientific level, the paper may be rejected on formal grounds.
- All scientific articles that have successfully passed the examination on formal grounds are subject to mandatory double-blinded peer review(This means that neither the author nor the reviewer knows the names and affiliations of each other).
- When reviewing the article and writing a review, the reviewer should evaluate the following aspects in order to obtain the most complete and objective review of the manuscript:
- relevance of the topic;
- originality of the study, novelty of the data obtained;
- completeness and correctness of the problem statement in the literature review;
- clarity of the presentation of the aims and objectives of the paper, their compliance with the presented factual material;
- completeness of the description in Materials and methods section;
- adequacy of the choice of research methods;
- adequacy of statistical analysis;
- compliance of the results with the established research goals;
- availability of an assessment of the received data;
- validity of the conclusions;
- scientific significance of study results;
- practical significance of study results;
- visual presentation of the material (availability of tables, figures);
- comparison of the own data with the reference data;
- availability of references to all significant publications in the relevant field;
- qualitative summary and correct choice of keywords;
- compliance of the paper with ethical standards;
- correctness of result interpretation in findings or conclusions, if any;
- for clinical observations: completeness of the clinical description, instrumental and laboratory test methods, correctness of the analysis.
- Upon the manuscript’s reviewal, the reviewer gives one of the following recommendations to the editorial board (the reviewer’s decision should be motivated):
- the paper is recommended for publication as it is;
- the paper is recommended for publication taking into account the corrections of the reviewer;
- it is recommended to forward the article for additional review to another expert;
- the paper is rejected for publication.
- If the review contains recommendations for correcting and finalizing the manuscript, the executive editor sends the received reviews to the author. In the prepared new version of the manuscript, the author should take into account the comments of the reviewers or give each reviewer a reasoned response to each comment (the preferred format of response is the table).
- The manuscript revised by the author is re-sent for review to each reviewer.
- If the author does not intend to revise the manuscript, the editorial staff of the journal should be notified accordingly. The work with the manuscript will be discontinued.
- If the authors do not respond to the request of the editorial staff of the journal for more than one month, the manuscript is taken off the register. In such situations, the authors are accordingly notified of the removal of the manuscript from the register due to the expiration of the time for revision.
- If the author and the reviewer have unsolvable contradictions regarding the article, the editorial board has the right to send the article to another reviewer. In conflict situations, the paper can be submitted for consideration to one of the members of the editorial board. The final decision in such cases is made by the editor-in-chief.
- The "Veterinary Science Today" journal may publish articles written by the editor-in-chief, his/her deputy, executive editor and members of the editorial board, but there should be no abuse of official position.

- When publishing articles by members of the editorial board, the editor-in-chief and his/her deputy, the information about the authors’ affiliation with the journal should be indicated in the Conflict of Interests section.
- The presence of a positive review is not a sufficient reason for the publication of the article. The final decision on expediency of publication is made by the editorial board, based on the validity of the work and its compliance with the subject of the journal. In conflict situations, the decision is made by the editor-in-chief. The decision of the editorial board for each submitted manuscript is recorded in the minutes of the editorial board meeting. An article that is not recommended for publication by the decision of the editorial board is not accepted for re-consideration.
- A reasoned refusal for publication is sent to the author by e-mail.
- After the journal's editorial board makes a decision on the admission of the paper for publication, the editorial staff informs the author about this.

Responsibilities and rights of authors
Submission of an article for consideration by the editorial staff of the journal implies that it contains new scientific results obtained by the author (a team of authors) which have not been published anywhere before.
Authors should be aware that they bear personal responsibility for the provided manuscript, which implies compliance with the following principles.
Manuscript requirements
Authors of original research articles must provide reliable results of the work performed, as well as an objective discussion of the significance of the study. The data underlying the work must be accurately presented. The work must contain sufficient detail and bibliographic references for possible reproduction. Claims that are known to be false or falsified will be considered to unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.
Reviews and scientific articles must also be accurate and objective, editorial "opinions" must be clearly expressed.
Data access and storage
Authors may be asked to provide original article data for review. Authors should be prepared to provide open access to such data (according to ALPSP-STM Statement on Data and Databases) if possible, and in any case should be prepared to retain source materials for a reasonable period of time since their publication.
Originality and plagiarism
Authors must ensure that the data presented in the manuscript represent the original work. In case of using fragments of other people's works and / or borrowing the statements of other authors, the article must contain appropriate bibliographic references with the obligatory indication of the author and the source.
All articles submitted to the journal undergo a mandatory check for possible duplication and plagiarism through the “ANTIPLAGIAT” system. Excessive borrowing, as well as plagiarism in any form, including inaccurate quotations, paraphrasing, or appropriation of the results of other people's research, will be considered unethical and unacceptable actions. Such articles are not accepted for publication. If plagiarism is suspected, an appropriate investigation will be carried out.
Plurality, redundancy and simultaneity of publications
An author should not publish a manuscript mostly devoted to the same research in more than one journal as an original publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time is perceived as unethical behaviour and is unacceptable.
The author should not submit an article previously published in the journal "Veterinary Science Today" for consideration to another journal.
Recognition of primary sources
The contribution of others parties must always be acknowledged. Authors should cite publications that are relevant to the performance of the submitted work. Data obtained privately, for example, in the course of a conversation, correspondence or discussion with third parties, should not be used or presented without the written permission of the original source. Information obtained from confidential sources, such as evaluation of manuscripts or awards of grants, should not be used without the written permission of the authors of the work related to confidential sources.
Authorship
The journal "Veterinary Science Today" adheres to the following authorship criteria (developed and described in the ICMJE recommendations):
1) significant contribution to the development of the concept or planning of scientific work or the acquisition, analysis or interpretation of this work;
2) preparation of the manuscript draft or its critical revision with the introduction of valuable intellectual content;
3) final approval of the printed version of the manuscript;
4) acceptance of responsibility for all aspects of the work; the authors should also ensure that all issues related to the accuracy and integrity of any part of the work can be properly investigated and settled.
In addition to being responsible for those parts of the work that the author performed him/herself, he (she) must have an idea for which specific components of the work the other co-authors are responsible.
In addition, authors must be confident in the integrity of the contributions of their co-authors. All persons identified as authors should meet all four criteria for being an author, and all persons who meet these four criteria should be identified as authors.
Individuals who do not meet all four criteria should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments section.
Contributions of authors and non-authors
The Acknowledgements section may mention people who contributed to the work but do not meet the criteria for authorship, for example: the ones supporting the study, acting as a mentor, assisting in data collection, coordinating the study, etc.
To correctly determine the contribution, the authors of the journal "Veterinary Science Today" can use one of the COPE recommended schemes:
Liability
The editors of the journal "Veterinary Science Today" bear responsibility for compliance of journal issues with the standards of authorship and author's contribution.
Authors are obliged to provide transparent and correct information about the authors of the article and persons who have made a significant contribution to the preparation of the article.
If the manuscript is submitted for consideration to the journal "Veterinary Science Today" by the editor-in-chief, deputy editor-in-chief, member of the editorial board or executive editor, the manuscript should be reviewed only by external reviewers.
Statement of authorship
The editorial staff of the journal "Veterinary Science Today" requires that along with the manuscript the authors provide a statement of authorship signed by all co-authors. By signing the statement, the authors guarantee that:

- It is indicated that the study was funded by organizations whose authors are not included into the general list. This requires a more thorough check of the contributions of all authors and, if necessary, seeking the necessary clarifications from the responsible author.
- The list of authors includes scientists from another scientific field. This may indicate guest authorship.
- In the Acknowledgments section the authors mention a person without specifying a contribution.
- The article presents a very long or very short list of authors that is not typical for the particular scientific field or type of article.
- Description of the authors' contributions is incomplete: for example, there is no information about the persons who prepared the draft version of the manuscript or processed the data.
- “Antiplagiat” checking reveals that there are borrowings from the thesis, the author of which is not listed in the appropriate section of the article.
- Articles on similar topics were published by other teams of authors.
- The list of authors was changed at the stage of article publication without prior discussion with the editors of the journal.
- The author has multiple publications, although his position does not imply such publication activity (e.g., head of department, director of the institute).
- Corresponding author cannot respond to reviewers' comments.
The editorial staff of the journal "Veterinary Science Today" expects that organizations affiliated with the author will be ready to participate in the investigation of disputes about authorship.

- handling post-publication critiques;
- post-publication discussions and revisions;
- suspected manipulation of post-publication peer reviews;
- image manipulation in a published article;
- data fabrication in a published article.
